Cops and Comedy
Officers as comic relief? From the Keystone Kops to Super Troopers and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, law enforcement can be fun to laugh at in movies and on TV. The Keystone Kops hit the big screen in 1914. Their slapstick humor was an instant success. Mack Sennett, the movie's creator, believed the "essence of comedy... [is] the unseating of dignity." He certainly poked fun at authority with his bumbling cops. So much so that he drew the anger of real officers.
