Acts and Laws of Massachusetts Bay, 1759
This book offers insight into America's law enforcement roots. When the English arrived in the colonies, they brought their system of law enforcement with them. In New England, colonies appointed sheriffs to oversee countries. Constables patrolled towns during daylight hours. A watchman made a "hue and cry" if anything went amiss at night, telling those in earshot to sound the alarm.
