A red 1956 Thunderbird may seem like an unlikely lead car/crash wagon for a major airport, but from 1957 until 1968 one did exist at McCarran Airport. Owned and operated by George & Peg Crockett's Alamo Airways, the vehicle was a fixture around the Airport. George Crockett had founded McCarran as Alamo Airport in 1941. Clark County purchased the airport from the Crocketts, renaming it McCarran Airport in honor of Senator Pat McCarran, and opening on December 17, 1948. The Crocketts continued to operate Alamo Airways at the airport until the operation was purchased by Howard Hughes in 1968. This 1956 Thunderbird has been restored as an exact reproduction of the original lead car/crash wagon, and has been donated by Peg Crockett.
