This statue of Andrew Jackson was installed in 1853 to honor his role in the Battle of New Orleans. At the time it was erected, the sculptor, Clark Mills, accomplished a minor sculptural miracle. He achieved world renown by balancing the entire weight of the statue on just the back legs of the horse. |
