In July 1879 citizens of Yorkville, South Carolina (present-day York, SC) and Kings Mountain, North Carolina spearheaded efforts to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the battle. This newfound campaign soon created the Kings Mountain Centennial Association and sought to purchase a portion of the core battlefield for the placement of the Centennial Monument. The three-day 1880 Centennial Celebration commenced on October 5, 1880, with a Reunion Day, Military Day, and Centennial Day.
