Steadman and Thompson didn't get to see the Ali-Foreman fight after all. Thompson sold their tickets and went to the pool with an ice bucket, a Heineken, a bottle of Glenfiddich and a bag of grass. "This is it, Ralph. An aesthetic experience. F-ck the fight!"
Steadman drew the pictures, but Thompson never wrote up the story. "The biggest f-cked-up story in the history of journalism" ended with the journalists leaving Kinshasa voodooed and empty-handed, apart from two elephant tusks Hunter had secreted in his luggage. The tusks still hang above his fireplace at Owl Farm, Woody Creek. |
