Letter Press Series: Proof Print (2020-21)
Installed on either side of this opening panel, the two photogram/monotype compilations that comprise Smigrod's Letter Press Series provide apt bookends to her Paper Light project. Experimenting with various degrees of opacity or transparency of printing inks, she ran photograms through al letterpress, printing text in bold typeface over the directionally and tonally reversed images. These unique monotypes mirror the singularity of the photogram. Addressing concepts of text and image interplay, form, harmony, destruction, and photographic truth, these works constitute conceptual photographic narratives encapsulating the nature of Smigrod's creative endeavors.
With imagery drawn from reproductions in a discarded book of Italian Renaissance paintings and the words PROOF PRINT overlaid in semi-transparent red ink, this assembly references an intermediary stage of the printing process with an evidentiary connotation. The words FALSE TRUTH inscribed in opaque gold ink over the final image hints at issues of veracity and transparency.
