The Reef Map Series (Opposite Wall)
The life cycle of the coral echoes our own, with its elements of birth, growth, loss, and death. Even the promise of rebirth is a recent- ly discovered feature of the coral's life, a ray of hope in the doomsday scenario of climate change. As oceans warm and stressed corals lose algae, some corals species do not turn white, but instead put on displays of bright colors to attract their light-sensitive symbionts back. Burko's optimistic understanding that coral reefs might be able to correct their own course contributes to the joyful spirit that can occasionally burst from these colorful paintings, an expressive contrast to the more dystopic Glacier Map Series that is set in tandem with the Reef Map Series. |
