In Syria

Hamoud al-Jnaid

Reporter and photographer Hamoud al-Jnaid joined activist Raed Fares when he launched Radio Fresh in 2013 as an independent voice reporting on the Syrian civil war. Radio Fresh used humor to defy both President Bashar Assad's murderous regime and the religious terrorists trying to topple him. When extremists banned music, the station broadcast clucking chickens and bleating goats. Fares, 46, survived multiple assassination attempts and was kidnapped and tortured. Still, he defied the extremists, running a training program for young journalists and opening a day care center so women could attend school. In October 2018, Fares and al-Jnaid, 38, were followed by a silver van as they drove through the city of Kafranbel. A gunman opened fire from inside the van, killing both men. A group linked to al-Qaida is suspected in the attack.
