Ján Kuciak

Investigative reporter Ján Kuciak covered corruption and crime for the news website Aktuality.sk. In the fall of 2017, his reporting on fraud allegations against powerful Slovak businessman Marian Kocner prompted a chilling phone call. "I'll be looking especially into you, your mother, your father and your siblings," Kocner told Kuciak, who reported the call to police. Five months later, Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, both 27, were found shot to death in their home near Bratislava, the capital. In March 2019, Kocner was charged with ordering the journalist's murder. At the time of his death, Kuciak was also working on a story linking top Slovakian government officials with a violent Italian mafia syndicate. Outrage over Kuciak's murder sparked massive protests and prompted Prime Minister Robert Fico to resign days later.
