In the Saudi Consulate, Turkey

Jamal Khashoggi

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi fled his native Saudi Arabia in 2017, calling the repressive regime of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "unbearable" in his first column for The Washington Post. In October 2018, Khashoggi entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to obtain divorce papers so he could remarry. Khashoggi, 59, was never seen again. Days later, the Turkish government reported that Khashoggi had been tortured, murdered and his body dismembered with a bone saw inside the consulate. His death set off worldwide outrage. Once a Saudi government insider, Khashoggi criticized Saudi Arabia and Salman in his columns for The Washington Post and as editor in chief of the Saudi newspaper Al-Watan, making him a powerful voice of dissent in the Arab world. Saudi officials have denied the prince's involvement in Khashoggi's death, but the CIA concluded that Salman ordered the execution. In The Washington Post, Khashoggi wrote, "I am raising my voice. … I can speak when so many cannot."
