In Afghanistan

Yar Mohammad Tokhi

A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle set off an explosion that rocked Kabul, Afghanistan, during morning rush hour on April 30, 2018. The blast struck the neighborhood that housed NATO headquarters, embassies and the Afghan intelligence service. As reporters swarmed the scene to document the carnage, a second Islamic State suicide bomber used a fake press pass to infiltrate the crowd. The second blast -- aimed at media workers -- killed 25 people, nine of them journalists: Yar Mohammad Tokhi, 54, a camera operator for Tolo News, was killed along with Maharram Durrani, 28; Abadullah Hananzai, 26; Sabawoon Kakar, 30; Shah Marai, 41; Nowruz Ali Rajabi, 31; Ghazi Rasooli, 24; Ali Saleemi, 19; and Saleem Talash, 24. Some had just started their careers; others were seasoned professionals. Said Agence France-Presse Chairman Fabrice Fries, "This tragedy reminds us of the danger that our teams continually face on the ground and the essential role journalists play for democracy."
