Stories of the Fallen

Around the globe, extremists, repressive regimes and criminals deliberately target journalists. In 2018, 34 of the 54 journalists who died on the job were killed because of their work -- nearly double the number in 2017, reports the Committee to Protect Journalists. Nineteen of the 21 reporters profiled here were killed in retaliation for their reporting. Even covering local news, such as severe weather, puts reporters in danger. In war zones and storm zones, journalists risk their lives to report the news.

Each year, the Newseum selects a representative group whose deaths illustrate the dangers journalists face around the world. The 21 individuals recognized here represent all journalists who died while reporting the news in 2018.

The photos at the top of this wall depict journalists from previous years whose names are etched on the glass panels at left.
