The colonists found no freshwater springs on Jamestown Island and, in the beginning, drank water from the tidal James River. Salt in the river water may have caused a variety of illnesses. There was no well on the island until late 1608 when John Smith reports digging "a faire Well of fresh water in the Fort of excellent sweet water which till then was wanting."
