Rising 700 feet above the desert floor, the Dunes were created by southeast winds blowing finely grained sand from the Mojave River. When the sand grains slide down the steep upper slopes, a "booming" sound is produced. The Kelso Dunes are open to hikers but closed to vehicles. |
