From Wheat to Pattern: Material & Form

Design evolution and reviews did not end with the building permit. As the focus shifted to the memorials' materiality and production, artisans provided necessary expertise to realize the work.

Trained as an architect, not a sculptor, Kurylas partnered with Lawrence Welker IV, owner of Laran Bronze Foundry in Chester, Pennsylvania, to create the Field of Wheat bas-relief. The collaboration was exciting for both parties. Ideas that made sense on paper were tested, and in some cases discarded. To transform the harvested wheat into a foam pattern, they experimented with virtual modeling software, which the foundry had never used on a project of this scale. Together they explored different production methods and refined the memorial's design.
