Building Place:
Fabrication & Installation

On-site construction, supervised by Forrester Construction, began in May 2014. In addition to building the sculpture's foundations, vertical surface, and stormwater system, contractors readied the plaza's other visible elements -- the patterned granite, redbud trees, and bench.

With the Field of Wheat design finalized, patterns were made from the virtual model to produce molds. The work was then cast in sections, assembled and furnished at the foundry. The 30-foot long bronze bas-relief, an angled inscription panel at its end, wouldn't be delivered until August 2015, ten months later than planned and only three months before the dedication ceremony. The sculpture traveled from the foundry on a flatbed truck. Given its odd center of gravity, it required special rigging to swing into place.

On November 7, 2015, the memorial was dedicated and open to the public.
