Studying the Sea
This sketch shows how Hokusai examined the character of the ocean and tried to convey it in the hanging scroll before you. Posed bravely amid tempestuous waves, a fisherman gazes firmly into the distance, his eyes fixed on the sea and its bounty. Floating above his head is Hokusai's second attempt at rendering the face, this time in a three-quarter view. Hokusai never forgot the ocean is Japan's lifeline and constant companion.
