Streams to Seas

Plastic pollution is not just an ocean problem. It also affects streams and waterways statewide, including those in the Salt Lake Valley. Single-use plastics pose challenges to the quality of our local water supply. They also impact important wildlife habitat in and along the Jordan River and its tributaries.

Slowing the Tide

One of the waterways impacted by trash is Emigration Creek which runs through the Zoo. Trash that makes its way into the creek is often carried to the Jordan river. For the Jordan River, the amount of trash floating downstream from its tributaries has become so large that trash booms have been installed. The booms keep the trash from ending up in the Great Salk Lake.
