The Hay-Adams Houses
The Hay and Adams houses on the northwest corner of 16th and H streets, NW, were designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson in 1884. Although Richardson was one of America's greatest architects, he produced just three houses in Washington, only one of which survives. As close friends, Henry Adams and John Hay, and their wives, often entertained and traveled together. Adams once complained that messengers delivering packages to Hay usually came to see his smaller house on the left thinking that it was the servants entrance. The two houses were sold in 1927 to develop[er Harry Wardman, a who built The May-Adams on the site.
