Shields Green, along with John Brown and five other raiders, were barricaded in the armory fire engine house when United States Marines stormed the building. "The old hero and his men were hacked and wounded with indecent rage," wrote Osborne Anderson. "Of the four prisoners taken at the engine house, (there was) Shields Green, the most (relentless) of all our party in his hatred against the stealers of men."
