Gibbons House:
The foreman of the Hagley Yard and their families lived in this house for more than 50 years following its construction by the company in 1846. John Stewart and his family were photographed in front of the house in 1885, the year he succeeded John Gibbons as foreman.
John Gibbons came from Ireland as a young man to work in the powder mills. He moved his family into the foreman's house after he was promoted to the job in 1859. Gibbons supervised 65 men. Two of his sons worked in the yards, one a millwright and the other a carpenter.
