Blacksmith Shop:
E.I. du Pont purchased the property for Hagley Yards in 1813. This building was constructed as a blacksmith shop sometime between that year and 1834, when it appeared on a property survey. For nearly 60 years, the shop produced the forged iron work necessary for powder mill construction and repair as well as for wagon maintenance. This photograph taken in the 1880s shows workmen putting an iron tire on a wagon wheel.
Today the building is residence for Hagley employees and provides short-term housing for visiting scholars to Hagley Museum and Library. Please respect their privacy. |
