Two Girls
This appealing double portrait of girls in matching gingham dresses refutes the commonly held belief that no one ever smiled when posing for their daguerreotype. The subtle smile of the girl pictured on the right seems to convey her pleasure in having her portrait made and in sharing the experience with a companion, presumably her sister.
Quarter-plate daguerreotype with applied color, c. 1852–58
