Many African Americans huddled together waiting for the clock to strike midnight on New Year's Eve 1862, when the "glorious morning" would dawn upon them with a new promise of liberty. However, they were not waiting or "watching" for their freedom. Instead, they were waiting for the war to preserve the Union to become a war to end slavery.
What are you waiting for?
