Matthew Brady
William Barksdale, c 1858
Barksdale appears here in his days as a Member of Congress from Mississippi. This small format was known as the carte-de-visite. First invented by Parisian photographer Andre-Adolphe-Eugene Disderi in 1854, this format (the size of a calling card) gained wide popularity in the United States and Europe in the years leading to the Civil War.
