The breached wall -- where Union shells had torn a dangerous hole in the fort during the early afternoon of April 11, 1862 -- is here on the right. The redder bricks are the new ones which show what had to be replaced. You can see by the amount of new brick that the whole corner had become completely unsupportable. While it took only 30 hours to breach the wall, it took Federal troops six weeks to repair the battle damage and make the fort ready to be garrisoned for the remainder of the war.
