Samuel R. Lowery was a free black minister in Nashville prior to the war. In 1856, he fled north after the debate over slavery in the presidential election that year spurred race riots in the city. He returned to Nashville during Union occupation and served as a chaplain and teacher for the United States Colored Artillery regiments. |
