The Abbott Memorial. Robert Abbott, the son of a former slave, became the editor and publisher of "The Chicago Defender," claimed to be the most influential and widely read African-American owned newspaper in early 20th century America. He founded the newspaper in 1905 and Pullman porters helped distribute it across the country. In the 1930's, he paid $1,600 for this monument, located near where he was born, to honor his family.
