The Barracks:
The most common type of shelter for garrisons such as those at Fort Sevier/Fort Bruce was a small hut of chinked logs. If the necessary tools were available, a roof of split timbers might be added. More often, however, a ten cloth served as roof. One door and a chimney completed the construction, although soldiers frequently added a wooden floor and a window. The huts generally housed from four to ten men, the number composing a mess, and were built by those who were to live in them.
