"No other subject can come even edgewise; and all seemed to fear a return of the Yanks to Clarksville."
-- Serepta Jordan, November 3, 1862

Bruce and his men were replaced by other troops. The 102nd Ohio Infantry, using a steamboat armed with a small cannon, visited Palmyra to roust raiders hiding in the railroad tunnel. The 83rd Illinois Infantry was spread between Clarksville and Dover. Among their ranks were future U.S. Marshal Virgil Earp and Marion Morrison, actor John Wayne's grandfather. Constant skirmishes with guerrillas resulted in Morrison being wounded in 1864.

Virgil Earp, charged with stealing money, spent time in Clarksville's jail. He and his brother Wyatt were later famous as U.S. Marshals and for the gunfight at the OK Corral.
