The Union Strikes Back:
After Colonel William Lowe's Union troops returned to Dover in September 1862, Clarkesville was unoccupied by either army. Locals anticipated the Union Army's return, and in December, a brigade under Colonel Sanders Bruce arrived from Russellville, Kentucky. From their post at Fort Sevier, renamed Fort Bruce, Union troops patrolled the countryside attempting to subdue Confederate guerrilla activity. Moving as far west as Palmyra and Yellow Creek, often by riverboat, troops clashed with guerrillas and cavalry raiders.

Like many Kentucky families, Bruce's family had divided loyalties. His sister Rebecca was married to future Confederate General John Hunt Morgan.
