of town on the Red River. Sayers laid out another fort on Hopkinsville Pike, but it was never built. Short of labor, Sayers appealed through newspapers for more slaves and construction equipment. Due to inadequate response, the forts would not be finished in time. In January 1862, Sayers reported the forts were "progressing very well now" and guns were being mounted. When captured, it was reported that three guns each were mounted at Forts Clark and Sevier with two at Fort Terry. |
