Fertile fields and flowing waters were cornerstones of early commerce.

Farming Industry: Wheat, Hogs, & Sheep:

Farmers raised crops and animals for local, national and world markets. Among these were wheat for the local flour industry, hogs for meat processing, and sheep, which provided wool. Flour, saw and woolen mills were built along the waterways, which powered the millstones and saws. Peacher's Mill, Barker's Mill, and Ringgold Mill were among the sites built prior to the war. In 1858, Clarksville shipped 170,000 barrels of flour. Large warehouses stored commodities to await steamboat transport to the world.
