Serving During the Civil War and Great Depression
Hundreds of troops camped at Franklin Park throughout the Civil War. That included the remnants of the 27th New York Infantry, who encamped here after their flight from the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas).
In the 1930s, Franklin Park became one of President Roosevelt's New Deal projects, helping to put people back to work during the Great Depression. The Public Works Administration (PWA), Works Progress Administration (WPA), Civil Works Administration (CWA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) all participated in rehabilitating the park.
