A Natural Gathering Place
The park that brings people together

Origins
Franklin Park was never supposed to be a place. When Pierre L'Enfant designed Washington, DC in 1791, he did not set aside this land as a park. However, there were several springs that served as a natural gathering place.
In 1932, the federal government purchased five acres of what would become Franklin Park to secure fresh water for the White House and create a public park. Franklin Park has changed over time, served when called upon, and brought locals together to celebrate, to protest, and to recreate.
