In the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January, thousands of residents fled the capital Port-au-Prince. They said they were tired of sleeping in the streets, afraid of being robbed by gangs and looters, or fearful that aftershocks might destroy the buildings still standing. As aid was slow to reach many victims of the earthquake, particularly in the capital city, looting became a strategy for survival.
