The Washington Memorial Chapel was erected through the efforts of the Rev W Herbert Burk, DD, an Episcopalian minister. He became enthralled with the American Revolution in 1908 and decided to build a chapel there. It has carved soldiers and angels, flags of the revolution and regiments, quotations from Washington, memorials to his generals, the seals of the states, and 13 stained glass windows done in red, white, and blue.

The cornerstone of the building was laid in 1903. Originally, a small wooden chapel was built here only to be replaced by the bigger one. There was controversy about building it and President Teddy Roosevelt came out and delivered a speech in the wooden one to promote the idea. The regular chapel was finished around 1913.
