In the 1901 Puck magazine illustration, a Pullman car porter confronts a railroad company boss about declining tips. The porter argues that the company should begin paying employees a salary. Porters were often depicted in white media as greedy people who lived large off of tips. In reality, they worked 20-hour shifts for very low wages. |
