On Monday, June 19, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that The Slants can trademark their name, ending an 8-year legal battle against the US Patent and Trademark Office. The Slants are heroes in our world for defending the First Amendment against bureaucrats acting as self-appointed thought police.
Justice Samuel Alito put it perfectly in that "speech may not be banned on the ground that it expresses ideas that offend." True defenders of free speech understand this dynamic, and large, Supreme Court victories like this remind everyone about all of the different types of speech the First Amendment protects.
