Several parks around New York Harbor are former military posts, such as Fort Wadsworth and Fort Hancock, both part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Family and community were an important of military life. This hobby horse from Fort Jay on Governors Island was for the children whose families moved from base to base as their parents' duty stations changed. Some of these "army brats" have grown up to be Park Rangers, welcoming visitors to their childhood homes.
