Francis Brownell was issued this Model 1855 US percussion rifle as an enlistee in Company A of Ellsworth's regiment. He used this .58 caliber weapon to fatally shoot Ellsworth's assailant, innkeeper James W. Jackson, and bayoneted him as he fell to the floor.
