Couple of Courting Mien from Nippur:
This is a devotional statue made of gypsum from the ancient Sumerian city of Nippur. The statue, which dates back to 2600 BC, was found under the floor of a shrine in Iraq. Devotional statues were popular in ancient Sumerian culture as a means of expressing religious beliefs. Here, it is believed that the sculpture represents a couple worshipping together. The large eyes represent people looking towards the gods in heaven.
