Duck Weights:
Mesopotamia, Weight in the Shape of a Sleeping Duck, c 2000-1500 BCE, originally is carved limestone. These ducks were often used in the markets for buying and selling goods. Each one weighs a specific amount. That way a vendor could use one of these ducks to make sure he was giving his customer the right quantity of goods. The head, on an elongated neck, is turned to rest on the back. The simplified contours combined with the tactile surface invite comparison to sculptures by Constantin Brancusi and other modern sculptors.
