Education and Science for the Future
One of the first fields of cooperation between Argentina and the United States
In Argentina, education from elementary school through high school is compulsory and free of charge. The country has one of the highest literacy (98%) and school life expectancy (16.1 years). Public Universities guarantee universal access to free college-level education. The current budget allotted to education represents over 6% of GDP.
Argentina has been awarded give Nobel Prizes. The Argentine doctor Bernardo Houssay was the first Latin American Scientist to win a Nobel in 1947 (Medicine). The other argentine [sic] personalities to get the prize were Carlos Saavedra Lama (Peace -- 1936), Luis Federico Leloir (Chemistry -- 1970), Cesar Milstein (Medicine -- 1984), and Adolfo Perez Esquivel (Peace -- 1980).
As part of the bilateral cooperation between Argentina and the United States, sixty five American teachers were sent to Argentina between 1869 and 1891. They contributed to build the foundations of a public educational system very well recognized throughout Latin America.
