The first GI coffeehouse opened in Columbia, South Carolina, near the Fort Jackson Army Base, in January 1968. Fred Gardner developed the idea of establishing coffeehouses outside of military bases to provide an alternative to the bars, brothels and exploitative businesses that separate soldiers from their payday earnings. |
