A Sense of Community: Canadian & American Quilters

Quilting has long brought communities together. Quilting bees began in as a way to share work. Today, quilting guilds help artists share techniques and ideas. Many of the artists in this show are members of one or more guilds, including Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), an international guild for art quilters.

Looking through the gallery, you will see Canadian art quilts celebrating Canada's 150th birthday. These quilts were created for and shown at the Houston International Quilt Show in 2017, the largest quilt show in North America. The quilts represent a how each artist interprets Canada's history, geography, and culture. Their statements touch upon what being Canadian means to them.

Paired with many of these quilts are pieces by the American quilters they inspired. Mary Pal, an American professional artist living in Canada, juried the American quilts.

The Embassy of Canada is proud to display these works of art along with the American quilts they inspired. Together, these quilts display the long-standing friendship of our two countries.
