The Hudson River School of Painting
The Embassy of Canada is pleased to host this exhibit of bronze portraits of the 19th Century American artists known as the "Hudson River School of Painting." The exhibit is sponsored by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation and the Boscobel House and Gardens. The bronze portraits by sculptor, Greg Wyatt are of the painters, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and Sanford Gifford. An earlier exhibit at the Embassy included Wyatt's portraits of Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Asher Durand, and Jasper Cropsey. The "Hudson River School of Painting" is so named for the artists' landscape paintings of the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area in New York state. Works by the school's second generation of artists include scenes from New England, the American West, and Canada. Their works can be found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada and have been exhibited by the Art Gallery of Ontario. The power and grandeur of many of their paintings helped influence the US Congress to create a national park system in 1916 and so it is fitting that we celebrate them during the US National Parks Service's centenary year. |
