Belonging to a Place
An Exhibition by Fogo Island Arts

Fogo Island Arts is a residency-based contemporary art venue for artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, curators, designers, and thinkers from around the world. Since 2008, FIA has brought some of the most exciting emerging and renowned artists of today to Fogo Island, Newfoundland to take part in residencies and to present solo exhibitions at the Fogo Island Gallery. Fogo Island Arts is an initiative of Shorefast, a registered Canadian charity with the mission to build economic and cultural resilience on Fogo Island.
Belonging to a Place features works by a selection of international artists who are alumni or forthcoming participants of the Fogo Island Arts residency program. The exhibition departs from a consideration of the concept of "place," seeking to examine where we come from and how we relate to multiple notions of belonging. Presenting sculpture, installation, video, painting and works on paper, the exhibition takes on a diverse, experimental and critical approach to contemporary art, its presentation and discussion.
Curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen, Director Kunsthalle Wien and Strategic Director, Fogo Island Arts.
Artists: Abbas Akhavan, Nadia Belerique, Mark Clintberg, Brenda Draney, Aslan Gaisumov, Ieva Epnere, Steffen Jagenburg, Leon Kahane, Isa Melsheimer, Mark Clintberg, Kate Newby, Silke Otto-Knapp, Paul P., Joseph del Pesco, Jeroen de Rijke & Willem de Rooij, Zin Taylor.
First presented at Scrap Metal, Toronto, from June 22 to September 23, 2017, the exhibition is a unique collaboration between Art en Valise, Fogo Island Arts, and Scrap Metal. These three Canadian organizations came together to realize a poetic, forward-thinking project based on shared values. The presentation at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC is a new iteration of the exhibition, featuring a selection of works from the original exhibition as well as additional artists and works.
