Pennsylvania Avenue as designed by Pierre L'Enfant:
Pierre L'Enfant was the architect and civil engineer appointed by George Washington to design the streets of the capital. In his original plans for the layout of the District of Columbia, L'Enfant intended for the area between the Capitol and the White House to be a grand avenue, hosting theaters, academies and embassies. Today, a majority of embassies are located further north of Pennsylvania Avenue, near and within the Tenleytown, Dupont Circle, and Georgetown neighborhoods.
